IN THE SHADOW OF POWER: A SOBERING LOOK AT WASHINGTON, DC, THROUGH THE LENS OF PHOTOGRAPHER KIKE ARNAL

February 1, 2010, Washington, D.C. – If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Kike Arnal's collection of ninety-two candid photographs of life in Washington, DC, (In the Shadow of Power, Charta Books Ltd; February 28, 2010) speaks volumes about the neglect and suffering prevalent in the nation's capital.

Arnal's striking, thought-provoking black and white photos capture the essence of life In the Shadow of Power, – revealing the little-known side of the capital through the lives of the poor, the sick, the impoverished and the forgotten in a stark contrast to the city's powerbrokers and elites.

Ralph Nader, writes in the forward: “Out of sight, out of mind,” is an adage that provokes most photographers, yet only the finest photographers can focus our attention on what we see every day but too often ignore. In Kike Arnal’s collection of pictures of life in Washington, DC, the most powerful capital city of the world, a tale of two cities emerges with a haunting nuance that gives viewers pause for rumination. The evocative photographers are those whose pictures speak for themselves – a form of visual communication that transcends words.” Nader added, “unlike residents of other western capitals, who have federal voting rights in their countries, District of Columbia residents have been denied full and proper voting representation in the U.S. Congress.”

Kike Arnal’s career as a documentary photographer has taken him across the Americas, the Middle East and Europe. His photographs have been featured in The New York Times, Life, Mother Jones, People, and other publications, and have been shown in numerous exhibits across the world.

“Washington, D.C. is truly a world symbol in ways most people do not understand. It is my hope that the work in this book might expand that understanding," said Arnal.

Kike Arnal’s work for "In the Shadow of Power," was sponsored by the Washington, DC, based Center for Study of Responsive Law which was founded by Ralph Nader in 1968. The Center has sponsored a wide variety of books, organizing projects, litigation and has hosted hundreds of conferences focusing on government and corporate accountability.
